Get Better Search Engine Rankings with RSS

by: Satyajeet Hattangadi

RSS is the latest craze in online publishing. But what exactly is RSS?

RSS or Rich Site Syndication is a file format similar to XML, and is used by publishers to make their content available to others in a format that can be universally understood.

RSS allows publishers to "syndicate" their content through the distribution of lists of hyperlinks.

It has actually been around for a while, but with the advent of spam filters and online blogging, it is fast becoming the choice of ezine publishers who want to get their message across to their subscribers.

However, not much attention has been given to the advantages RSS provides for search engine optimization.

Why Search Engines Love RSS

Many SEO experts believe that sites optimized around themes,or niches, where all pages correspond to a particular subject or set of keywords, rank better in the search engines.

For example, if your website is designed to sell tennis rackets, your entire site content would be focused around tennis and tennis rackets.

Search engines like Google seem to prefer tightly-themed pages.

But where does RSS figure in all this?

RSS feeds, usually sourced from newsfeeds or blogs, often correspond to a particular theme or niche.

By using highly targeted RSS feeds, you can enhance your site's content without having to write a single line on your own.

It’s like having your own content writer - writing theme-based articles for you - for free!

How can RSS improve my Search Engine Rankings?

There are three powerful reasons why content from RSS Feeds is irresistible bait for search engine spiders.

1. RSS Feeds Provide Instant Themed Content

There are several publishers of RSS feeds that are specific to a particular theme.

Since the feed is highly targeted, it could contain several keywords that you want to rank highly for.

Adding these keywords to your pages helps Google tag your site as one with relevant content.

2. RSS Feeds Provide Fresh, Updated Content

RSS feeds from large publishers are updated at specific intervals. When the publisher adds a new article to the feed, the oldest article is dropped.

These changes are immediately effected on your pages with the RSS feed as well. So you have fresh relevant content for your visitors every hour or day.

3. RSS Feeds Result in More Frequent Spidering

One thing I never anticipated would happen as a result of adding an RSS feed to my site was that the Googlebot visited my site almost daily.

To the Googlebot, my page that had the RSS feed incorporated into it was as good as a page that was being updated daily, and in its judgement, was a page that was worth visiting daily.

What this means to you, is that you will have your site being indexed more frequently by the Googlebot and so any new pages that you add to your site will be picked up much faster than your competitors.

How does this benefit you as a marketer?

Well, for example, let's says a top Internet Marketer comes out with a new product that you review and write up a little article on, and that your competitors do the same.

Google generally tends to index pages at the start of the month and if you miss that update, you will probably need to wait till the next month to even see your entry in.

But, since your site has RSS feeds, it now gets indexed more frequently. So the chances of getting your page indexed quickly are much higher.

This gives you an advantage over the competition, as your review will show up sooner in the search results than theirs.

Imagine what an entire month's advantage could do to your affiliate sales!

Why Javascript Feeds Are Not Effective

Some sites offer javascript code that generates content sourced from RSS feeds for your site.

These are of absolutely no value in terms of search engine rankings, as the googlebot cannot read javascript and the content is not interpreted as part of your page.

What you need is code that parses the RSS feed and renders the feed as html content that's part of your page.

This is achieved using server side scripting languages like PHP or ASP.

A good free ASP script is available from Kattanweb
http://www.kattanweb.com/webdev/projects/index.asp?ID=7

An equally good PHP script is CARP
http://www.geckotribe.com/rss/carp/

But, if you're looking for an easier solution, you should check out Express RSS
http://www.novasoft-inc.net/express-rss

So in conclusion, besides optimizing on page and off page factors, adding RSS feeds to your pages should be an important part of your strategy to boost your search engine rankings.

Below is 12 ways I find the most efficient in generating traffic to your site:

1. Pay Per Click. The Fastest way to get exposure online in world is by advertising with PPC (Pay Per Click) programs. Ads start running within minutes after you submit your billing information. You bid on relevant keywords and pay the bid amount each time someone clicks on the link through to your site.

2. Traditional Website Optimization. The factors that you must know for getting the top rankings: title of the page, description META tag, keyword META tag, in your headline, use HTML Tag, your first line of text, once or twice per paragraph, once/twice in bold, in the text of a link.

3. Weblog Optimization. Blogs are short for weblogs which is just an online journal where you can post articles, news and just comment on anything you want. You can set blogs up for free by using blogger which is also run by Google.

4. Article Marketing. Search engines love content, and it's that very content that let's you invite traffic from search engines. Here are double benefits from using this method: drive direct targeted visitors from hundreds of high traffic sites and increase your page rank and link popularity.

5. Press Release. A press release is news about your business. It is not an ad. Focus on telling your potential customers something about your business. Remember the who, what, when, where, why, and how of journalism.

7. Blog & RSS Directories. Blog and Ping is a service that you can use to let the blog and RSS directories know that you have updated your blog.

8. Autoresponder system. Once you run online advertising to drive traffic to your landing pages, so that you can collect subscribers. Many internet marketers neglect to build their own mailing list, and are losing out in a big way. Don't be one of them. Top internet marketers ALL build their own mailing lists.

9. Ezine Marketing. There are thousands upon thousands of ezines published on the Internet, and chances are excellent that there are many ezines published on a topic relevant to your site.

10. Viral Marketing. Viral Marketing allows you to build up your own opt-in list. These types of systems are usually based on some type of viral matrix, smiliar to a multi level marketing set up.

11. Auction. The system that ruthlessly convert visitors to bidders to finding wholesale suppliers and drop shippers all over the world for any product you want.

12. Traffic Exchange. Some systems require you to log-in to a "start page" and start surfing across other member's web pages. Each page you view earns you credit towards increased display of your own site.

How effective are these traffic methods? I am certain the traffic methods will help you get more incoming links and traffic to your web site. Doesn't matter what product you promote. More information about best traffic solutions, go to:

What makes webmasters crazy about page rank?

By: Rajendra Padhiar

What makes webmasters crazy about page rank?

Today in the world of webmasters all are crazy about Google page rank, before few years I don’t think scenario was not same.

Page rank is given by Google on the basis of site popularity in which I think Google calculates on the basis of number of back link particular webpage has. Google also consider the reliability of the website Google consider age of the domain name as tool to measure reliability of the sites. Google loves the unique content so if your site has lot of unique content than your chance to get good page rank is very high.

Here I am listing some features of page rank.

1. Over all value of your website increases.
2. It reflects reliability of your website.
3. It also reflects popularity of your website.
4. Search rank in Google will be increase.
5. You may get good number of visitors.
6. Webmasters can earn good revenue by selling links on the pages having good page rank.
7. It may also increase your adsense revenue.

All this and lot more that I might not consider here in above list. Which is enough to make webmaster crazy about the page rank.

The indexing method Google use is the different than yahoo search engine and msn.So msn,Google and yahoo all of these search engine may list your website on there indexing policy. All use different algorithm for giving any page a page rank.

As far as I have seen in past few months very few webmaster take care about there msn and yahoo page rank.

It is very tuff job to get good page rank in Google than msn and yahoo. and it is not true, msn and yahoo will not give your website a good traffic.

Above information is based on my knowledge and experience I am not claming all written things are absolutely true and applicable to all.

Searching for the Right Keywords through Staff Leasing Companies

A growing number of websites compete to be among the top ten listings in the search results. This position gives them a higher possibility of getting more customers compared with a lower rank. Web marketers use several tools to achieve high rankings, probably one of the most important although others don’t realize, is keyword research.

There are many tactics for optimizing a site to have high search rankings. But since most visits to a site start with a search engine click, optimizing a site for the right keywords is really critical. This is why keyword research is so important, right?

It is really important that you will be able to target all relevant keyword phrases to be able to be among the top rank websites. You just can’t afford to guess the keywords often searched by people, or else you’ll see your businesses slowly toppling down. Searching for the right keywords for your websites doesn’t simply take a day or two. It would sometimes take a week or more.

If this is so, how can busy people maintain or increase the ranks of their websites. Yeah, maybe it can be done, but how sure that it is done systematically and professionally? Hiring a new employee to do this can also be costly for a company especially if it is just starting. Some resort to webmaster staffing…

Getting someone from a webmaster staffing company to do professional keyword research and other services can do no harm to your business; it is to your advantage, in fact. The company wouldn’t have to provide office space for the staff as they will be working in their own place but still under your directions. Plus, you’re free from hiring and training costs. Staffs from webmaster staffing companies like Agents of Value are already well-trained and were able to pass extensive screening process to be able to provide world-class services.

Opting to hire from a webmaster staffing company can lessen your overhead expenses like overtime. This companies also charge lower for their services compared to others so you will be able to save in your labor cost. Most outsourcing offices are found in places with lower cost of living.

Keyword research may sound so easy but finding the right ones takes time and effort. Only people who have the time, knowledge and training can do this efficiently. If you want to get your sites on the top list, a webmaster staffing company is the best choice for you to look for someone who’ll work it for your business!

So Do We Really Need Google?

It's not so long ago that I used to subscribe to the notion that AOL and Yahoo believed they owned the Internet and had the right to control it. The over-the-top war on spam a clever smoke screen whilst out monitors were pumped with pop-ups that generated millions.

During the last couple of years however, it seems ownership of the Internet has been surrendered to a new overlord! GOOGLE! And we should all point our prayer mats to face Mountain View CA. Or should we?

For those of us involved in any form of search engine optimization, we are led to believe that if our websites are not recognised and accepted by our new master, then we are doomed to failure. There are currently hundreds of tutorials available on the internet which offer tips, tricks and secret formulae in making our pages "Google-Friendly", and in a format that is acceptable to this Search Engine Giant. Yet who knows what is acceptable to Google and what is not?

Google's algorithm changes are becoming more and more unpredictable and this deceit presents the potential for high damage to your profitability at short notice. In their Company Profile, Google claims that their mission is to "organize the world's information, and make it universally accessible and useful". It is questionable however, as to whether their methods offer the world free and relevant results for any search term, or whether they in fact, only present information offered by those

websites that adhere to Google's ever changing and secretive rulebook.

Since only a fraction of the World Wide Web is indexed by the "world's Leading Search Engine", it's not really rocket science to understand that the results offered in any Google search will not reflect the information available for that search term.

The Internet is there for all of us to enjoy. A free information system, with a level playing field when it comes to getting our websites noticed. Google's agenda now seems to be to present information from the highest bidders rather than delivering quality information to it's search pages. And what of "Google Ranking"? So much store is set by the importance of being ranked by Google, yet is it really that important?

For Example, lets say your interest is in Basket Weaving. You go to the Google Search page and enter "Basket Weaving", hit the search button and... at No.2 on page 1 (a place we all dream of seeing our website for our main keyword) you will see "Underwater Basket Weaving", a website with a Google page rank of 2/10 and showing limited information relevant to the requested search term. Now look at position 3 on page 1. Homecrafts Direct with a page rank of 0/10 and again quite limited in it's relevancy. If you now go to page 8 (A place we are led to believe has little chance of being noticed) At position one on the day of writing is SimplyBaskets.com, a beautifully presented, informative webpage, with a Google Pagerank of 4/10, specializing in "Basket Weaving". It is clear from this simple exercise, which can be demonstrated using practically any search term you choose, that Google's awesome search techniques don't really work as well as they would like to imagine they do. Perhaps it's their own constant meddling of protocol that will eventually expose them.

So why do we need Google? Does being ranked by Google make a difference? It would appear that one of the biggest, if not the most visited website on the Internet, Amazon.com don't fare any better than the rest of us where Google are concerned. They have a Google Pagerank of 0/10, and my Link Popularity Check software tells me that Google return no pages that link to Amazon.com - I find it difficult to believe that the "world's Largest Search Engine" does not recognize it's links back to Amazon.Com

The word Google is a play on the word "Googol", the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros, and whilst Google's founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, coined it to reflect their company's mission to organise an immense amount of information, I believe that the company's new agenda is to organise that amount of dollars into their bank account.

I do however swear that they will get no help from me in so doing! I am now cured of my Google adoration fixation, and set about my SEO duties treating all search engines the same. One can do little more than present an informative, attractive and useful website, with Meta Tags to help all search engines. The Internet belongs to us all, and hopefully it will stay that way for the forseeable future.

Latent Semantic Indexing For Search Engine Success?

Latent Semantic Indexing is all the talk now among Webmasters trying to keep up with the ever-changing Google indexing for sites.

First of all what is Latent Semantic Indexing? Well it is a complex mathematical formula, but it is being used by search engines to help them determine what is the theme of the site.

It is now known that Google especially are giving more importance to websites that are closely themed, and this can be very effective for achieving a good position in search engine results.

Google when it visits a web page will not only look at the keywords included on a page, but will look at all the content to see the relevance of the content to the keywords.

This will help search engines to better understand the overall theme of the page.

Assuming you have done some keyword research using one of the keyword tools available, I personally recommend Wordtracker as I find the results more reliable. What is the next step to make website pages more closely themed?

The answer is to try to use as many of the results returned from the keyword tool in your content. This of course needs to be done so that the pages reads well of course.

Using this method, search engines are in no doubt as to the theme of the web page.

Google uses LSI to associate words for classifying pages, as opposed to depending only on the keywords of the past.

Another use of latent semantic indexing is in helping Google in assessing the write type of adsense ads to display on web pages.

To see what words Google thinks are related to a keyword for example, just do a search for any word with the ~ tilde key first. It is possible to get a list from Google of related keywords.

Use their keyword tool, it may provide new words that haven't been returned by the keyword tool you have used.

A list of results will be returned that Google say are related to your keyword.

Now to get top positions in search engines, it will be important to consider latent semantic indexing because of the close theming of pages will result in higher rankings in search engines.

There is nothing complicated with using latent semantic indexing for your web pages, it is a question of having closely themed sites with content that is related to one theme, so there can be no doubt as to the pages topic.

Another important point to consider is to make sure that you have the anchor text (the words in the hyper links) should vary. It is a good idea to use different words related to your main keyword.

Do not have all the incoming links pointing to one page. By varying the anchor text this will not only get more pages indexed, but will also help with the theming of websites.

For example if your main keyword is seo, you could use anchor text like search engine, search engines, search engine optimization.

The SEO Benefits of One-Way Links and How to Get Them

One way links from other websites to yours basically tell the search engines that your site is useful and the content there is trusted.

One way links are also great because they will boost your website's link popularity. The more counted links you have going to your site, the better.

Google will give your website plenty of brownie points when it sees how popular your link is. This directly translates to higher rankings on the Google search engine. And it works the same way with other similar search engines, as well.

In this day and age Google is smart to reciprocal links, however. This means link exchanges just aren't as effective as they used to be. Make as many links one-way as you can, but in general all links are good to have.

If you're having trouble getting one way links remember that nobody will link to your site if there's no traffic there in the first place. Sometimes it's a good idea to jump start it yourself and purchase a couple one-way links. SEO friendly directories are perfect for this, and can deliver a good relevant link that the search engines will love.

If you're targeting specific keywords then having links from other sites is also a must if you want to rank well with these keywords. You can boost your ranking almost immediately by getting links from SEO friendly web directories. This is the surest way to succeed with your linking campaign.

Great ways to get one-way links include:

-Write brief articles relevant to your website and then submit them to article directories.

-Submit your website to major directories, though this takes a while.

-Have your site listed with SEO friendly web directories. This is a great way to get an instantly effective one-way link back to your website of choice.

Web Marketing with Search Engine Submissions

Most people on the Internet start with a search engine when we're looking for what we want. Search engine submission should naturally be on your list of to-do's when it comes to website marketing. You'll want your website listed in as many search engines as you can. This will extend the reach of your website as far as possible, thus bringing in visitors from every nook and cranny of the net.

Search engine submission doesn't guarantee that you'll receive good rankings, though. A search engine submission will let the search engine know where your page is and what it's about. This is the first step to getting more search engine exposure for your website. To improve your rankings, it might also be a good idea to invest time in the search engine optimization of your individual website pages.

If you're looking to do search engine submissions yourself, be prepared to spend a bit of time at the computer if you're doing more than 5-10 submissions. It can be a very time consuming process, and can get old quick. I know submissions may be grueling, but they are too beneficial to your website to ignore. There's plenty of services online that can help you in this area for a reasonable price and will get the job done quickly. It might be a good idea to check out one of these services, and see if you can benefit from what they offer.

When you combine search engine submissions as well as web site directory submissions, then you will really be helping the link strength of your website. Try to spend your time getting as many links from other places as possible, this is a good way to boost your rankings in search engines. Submissions can also build links when you need them, so you'll be able to see the positive results from your site quicker than normal.

Search engine submissions will let the search engines know that you're here, so they can give you the visitors that your website needs.

Why is Directory Submission Important?

If you’re new to the concept of Search Engine Optimization you will soon realize that there is some difference between Search Engine submissions and Directory Submission. Many webmasters who are new to this arena of SEO have failed to understand the importance of directory submissions. They feel that Search Engines submission is more than enough to get their website listed in the topmost positions in the search engines.

Directory submission is very important as far as getting your website recognized in the Search Engines. Many major search engine spiders browse through different web directories to determine the performance of the websites they indexed. As a result, it is always advisable to select quality web directories to submit your website. You might submit your website to thousands of web directories on the web, but it hardly makes sense if these web directories are not good enough as per the Search Engine standards. You need to make sure the directory you submit to not only has a good Pr but also quality back links. There's free web directories all on the net, but it's generally a good idea to submit your website to directories that will actually help your website. Check the PageRank of the web directory before you submit it. Expressvisits is a free web directory with a PageRank of 4, and web directories like this will help your website in the long-run.

Before you submit your website to different Web directories you have to make sure you have an effective title, keywords and description. It is advisable to read the guidelines of the web directory you submit your website too. Different directories have different guidelines. You have to make sure to follow these guidelines so as to get approved by them.

Lastly make sure to submit your website to appropriate category related to your website. If you have a website related to skin care you have to make sure to submit your website to the health category. If the directory has sub directories you can go ahead and submit it to the appropriate sub-category. Submitting website to appropriate categories will attract targeted traffic to your website.

The Easy guide to making a robots.txt file

If you have a website you really need to have a robots.txt file. It gives search engine spiders specific commands and it is easy to use and easy to maintain. Here is an easy guide to a robots.txt file in five minutes.

There are times when you don’t want a search engine to index a page or a folder on your website. Maybe you have some information you just don’t want to have show up in google. This may include your statistics page, a page of notes, or a dynamic page. And, importantly, if you use google adsense and the search tool that displays search results on your website google mandates you exclude this page from search engines. Which means they mandate you having a robots.txt file.

A robots.txt file is a simple document named robots.txt and saved in the root folder of your website. Search engines see this and follow any commands it contains. Create a simple text document using any word processor program like notepad and put these two lines it:

User-agent: *
Disallow:

The first line tells all spiders to listen up because the following command is for you. The second line means do not index any of the following pages. And it is here you put the url of any pages you don’t want spidered. So if you wanted the spiders to skip your private page it looks like this:

Disallow:/privatepage.htm

If you want the spiders to skip a whole folder you put the url of that folder with a slash like this:

Disallow:/privatefolder/

Simply place this text file in the root folder of your website and you are done. In the future you can add and remove commands easily.

The robots.txt file is a very easy file to write and maintain and it is a very powerful tool that will help you interact successfully with search engines. This disallow command is the simplest and most used command but there are also many other commands you can use and if you have a website it is well worth your time to have a robots.txt file and even to research it a bit further.

We have gathered some important tips to make it ease and help you to understand the process involved.

Site Page Naming
Page names are important! Relevant pages should be named after their primary keyword phrase.

Site File Names Analysis
Like the directory structure, file names play an equally important role. All file names should contain primary keywords or keyword phrases.

Web Page Title
The title tag of your page is the single most important factor to be considered when optimizing your web page for the search engines. It is because most engines & directories place a high level of importance on keywords that are found in your title tag.

Meta Tags
Meta elements provide information about a given webpage, most often to help search engines categorize them correctly, and are inserted into the HTML code in the format illustrated above, but are not visible to a user looking at the site.Meta tags are one of the most important elements of a web page when a search engine indexes it. This was originally created to help search engines find out important information about your page that they might have had difficulty determining otherwise. For Example, related keywords or a description of the page itself.
A search engine to display a short description of what your web page contains very often uses the description Meta tag. Some search engines look at the keywords entered into the keywords meta tag and will use this to display your page in the search results if it is one of the words used in the search criteria.

Web Page Copywriting
Like a Meta and Title tags, the content of your page is an important element in the search engine optimization process. The page copy being the actual, visible main content of the page should be presented and arranged in a logical and visually pleasing manner.
1. For the best results each page you submit should contain at least 200 words.
2. Include all keywords and arrange them in logical and readable manner.
3. More interlinking of keywords throughout the website.

Site Navigation
Is your site's navigation search engine friendly? Search engines require simple text based navigation in order to correctly spider your website. Java Script based navigation only, results in an incomplete index of your website. Some important suggestions for site navigation:
1. Avoid using flash at main page.
2. Addition of keyword related text based navigation should be added to the bottom of all pages.
3. Using Sitemap
4. Avoid using image based navigation

Image ‘alt' Attribute
Describe your images with the use of the alt tag. This will help search engines that index images to find your pages and will also help readers who use text only web browsers.
1. Do not use more than 2-3 keywords per page 2. Describe the image and don't just list the keywords.

Link Popularity
Link popularity is how many other websites are pointing to your website. If you have 199 Web pages pointing to your domain, then your link popularity is 199. Link popularity varies because each engine indexes the web differently. Ideally you would want a minimum of several hundred links per search engine, back to your website; but actual figures depend on the number of links held by your competition.

SEO Charges: Any Price Is Too High If There Are No Results

There is always heated and passionate debate over what is a fair price for SEO services. Different people vary widely on what they think is the right price a SEO service provider should ask from their clients.

Most SEO service providers view themselves as being extremely considerate and long suffering persons. The general feeling is that what they charge is in fact too low a price, especially when you consider the fact that the effect of their work will be felt and left with the web site for many years to come. It is a fact that SEO services are not very easy to provide and they can be quite time consuming, thus justifying a hefty invoice for services rendered. Still, the most critical aspect of any SEO services provided is the effect on a web site or the results obtained by the webmaster as a result of the entire exercise.

What kind of traffic is being driven to the web site as a result of the SEO services? When you really think about it, you quickly realize that it matters little how much was asked for the SEO service as long as there is some sort of response, or concrete results at the web site to prove that some SEO campaign was undertaken. If here was no result and the volume of traffic coming in from search engines has hardly changed and has generally remained constant then the SEO service has failed to work and however low the price that has been paid, it is money that has been wasted. In other words the service has proved to be extremely high priced and expensive.

This is exactly what people mean when they say paying a little more often proves to be cheaper and more cost effective, than paying a lower price and failing to receive results or see any benefits from the work done. SEO is a long term strategy. It is the most cost-effective means of increasing website visibility if you're willing to stay the course. Search engine optimization begins when relevant key terms to your website, business or product are being searched. If your website is not ranking in the top 20 for actual keywords being searched on the engines, then you definitely require search engine optimization immediately. Search engine optimization is like a well-marketed television advertisement; your business is placed in front of the most appropriate maturity audience at a given time to achieve the best return on investment.

You would not place your television advertisement about "car repair" in the morning during the cartoons for example. This type of advertisement would be marketed during programs that are relevant to that subject. The same is achieved through professional website promotion. Thinking about purchasing that premium SEO software that will hyper-optimize a website in less than 2 minutes and 2 seconds? Ask the following question first: What do I know about SEO? If the answer is "nothing", then don't buy it. Before you begin the Internet Marketing journey, do your homework. Don't spend big bucks on anything until answers to these questions can be found.

5 Real-Life Lessons in How to Get More Clients

by Alicia Forest

I'm six months pregnant and I did something recently I should have done months ago - I had a prenatal massage. Ahhh..... heaven. I've had this ongoing pain in my shoulder (on the side I carry my 2-year-old daughter, go figure) and it hurt to do pretty much everything. But you know, as a mom, you just suck it up and do it anyway.

I finally broke down at my last OB appointment and asked if I could get a massage for the pain. My doctor gave me the thumbs up with the caveat to make sure the person I went to worked with pregnant women.

So, off to Google I went to see what I could find. What happened from there is a true lesson in how to get more clients for your service-based business the easy way - by making it easy for your clients to sign up!

Lesson #1: Do simple search engine optimization on your website

Into Google's search field I typed "massage therapist for pregnant women Hudson Valley New York" and you know what happened? Exactly ONE listing came up. (Take note, all you massage therapists in the tri-state area). Thankfully this person had a lovely website that answered my initial questions and a contact form where I could reach her via email (my personal preference for communication).

The lesson? Have a web presence, for sure. But don't stop there. Be sure to use KEYWORDS in the copy of your text as well as in the code behind your site (the meta-tags) so your site comes up in the search results. Further digging on my part would have given me more listings for massage therapists, but why waste my time when exactly what I was looking for came up instantly?

TIP: My massage therapist's site had the advantage of having at least one of the keywords I used in my search in the title of her website/company: "Hudson Valley." If you work with clients 1:1 in your local area, consider adding your location and the area in which you service clients to your keywords.

Another positive for this site was the ability to contact her, either via phone or email. Giving your prospects choices on how they can reach you increases your credibility and respects varying needs for contact.

Lesson #2: Quick Follow-Up

The massage therapist responded the same day by phone and quickly answered the questions I had posed for her in my initial contact email.

So, even though I had contacted her via email, she took the initiative to call me, instead of emailing me back. This showed me right away that she was a serious business person, and that she was interested in obtaining me as a client. The fact that she came to the call prepared to answer my questions in a minimum amount of time was an added plus.

I was sold and ready to book my appointment with her, but I needed to juggle schedules with my family. She offered to send me her availability for the next few weeks via email and then I could contact her to book a session when it was convenient for me.

Lesson #3: Quick Follow-Up II

She followed up right away as promised, but unfortunately her email went into my spam folder. (I had given her my personal email address, which is the AOL address I've had since 1994, but since AOL filters 35% of all mail, I never even knew it was there.)

One day after that, she called to make sure I'd received her email. I emailed her back and said I hadn't (and then later found it in my spam folder). She immediately resent her email to both my personal and business email address, and ta-da, there it was.

Do you see the theme of follow-up here? She didn't wait around for me to make the next move. She picked up the phone and left a quick message to check in. It was neither salesy or pushy - it was gracious and courteous.

Lesson #4: Be Flexible (within reason)

Then the next stumbling block. With my schedule, I try to make any outside appointments in the early evening or on the weekends. She only had appointments available mid-day during the week. I explained my situation and she graciously offered to see me off-hours.

At this point, I was unhappily ready to move on to someone else, but she came through by offering to see me at a time that was much more convenient for me. Yes, that was great customer service in general, but what was REALLY smart about this was now that I've experienced her fabulous service, I will be returning for more, AND I will figure out how to do so during her normal business hours.

Lesson #5: Decrease No-Shows

The day before our appointment, she called to confirm our appointment and to make certain that I had received the directions she had emailed (another plus as I didn't have to spend time figuring them out myself).

Confirming any appointments you have with clients is essential to decreasing the number of no-shows you have. People get busy and honestly forget, so confirming appointments is an easy way to remind them and making sure your slot doesn't go unfilled.

So...the overall lesson here is that if she hadn't been easy to find and hadn't follow-up with me in such a precise and consistent manner, I guarantee that I would still be looking for someone and trying to figure out how to fit an appointment into my schedule ~ or more likely, I would have given up altogether. Instead, she made it super-simple for me to say "yes, sign me up!" and I feel fabulous as a result!

How can YOU follow-up with your potential clients so you can get the same results?

Top Ranking on Google Organic and Paid Search?

by Steve Buchanan

The Internet has basically taken over every other marketing venue in terms of spending. The importance of being visible online is crucial to the success of a company, whether brick and mortar or with an exclusively online market.

In the UK last year Internet advertising grew 41.2%. Sixty percent of companies that are spending online right now plan to increase online budgets. Companies are directing more of their budgets online attempting to build their brand and engage end-users.

Being at the top of Google organic search is the top priority for just about every online marketing company that knows what that top placement would mean to a company. The difference between being at position#1 and #11, in many cases, means the difference between a profitable company and a company scraping by.

Of the many ways to spend your advertising dollars/pounds, Google Adwords offers the opportunity for advertisers to be visible to thousands of targeted consumers and be seen in the top of a search for the keyword or keyword phrase the company targets. This works in the same way as if they were buying a half page advertisement in a specific area of the local newspaper (i.e. a perfume ad in the women's section).

Google Adwords is a paid tool that advertisers can use to bid on terms related to their business, and potentially show up on the first page of results for those keywords. This can be very expensive depending on your market and your competition.

The question is, do you need to pay to be seen if you are already showing in the top ten? The answer is yes you do.

Each search engine uses different sources for things such as paid results, natural results or directory results...and in some cases they even use different sources for their secondary listings.

"So if I'm #1 on Google, why do I need to pay for an additional placement in paid search? Won't I be paying for traffic that I will probably already get?"

Not necessarily, and we are going to show you and prove why beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Optimizing Flash Files For Search Engine Ranking

Flash Web Sites can be Optimized and Rank in Search Engines. Flash content is now ranking highly for some very competitive search terms. For example, a search on Google for the term 'luxury caribbean resort' returns http://www.parrotcay.como.bz is as the number 2 result (as of 3/26/06). If you search for the term, 'court room', http://www.courtroomtools.com is returned as the number 3 result in Google. This is a clear indication that Flash driven web site can be optimized and rank well with proper development and optimization techniques.

What is a Flash Movie?

A flash movie, or shock wave file (SWF), is the file format published when a Flash movie is exported. A SWF file can also be exported by several other Macromedia or Adobe Products. The SWF is usually an animation, dynamic menu, or highly interactive web-based application embedded into an HTML page. Flash files, when exported correctly for the best web-based optimization, are compressed, thus making their file size lightweight. The SWF format is ideal for presenting vector-based, interactive and animated graphics with sound and video for the web. Vector images are ideal because they will not "pixilize" if stretched or compressed. Flash files can also contain text which can be animated, static or dynamically populated from external sources, such an XML file or a database. Text embedded in a Flash file, for many years, could not be read by search engines. However, recent updates by Macromedia are making this a possibility.

Problems with Flash and Search Engines

Historically, it has been difficult to get Flash content indexed and ranked by search engines. In the past, search engines, such as Yahoo and Google, did not spider Flash content as they could not read the compressed file and much of the text inside the SWF appeared as graphics to the search engines.

The main page of a web site, if Flash-based, rarely ranked well, unless off-page factors such as link popularity or link reputation were sufficient enough to carry the page. Flash files that were indexed by Google, Lycos and other search engines, which did not have any text or key words associated with them in the search engine results pages (SERP).

Techniques Used in the Past to Make Flash Visible to Search Engines
Traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques would help your site get indexed, but not rank for search terms. Every web site needs at least one HTML page to load into a browser. For a web site developed completely in Flash, developers would embed their flash files into an HTML document and then create the meta tags in the head section of the HTML file. They would also add descriptive HTML text for the search engines in the body section of the HTML page, then use CSS positioning and percentages to load the Flash move in a pixel-perfect location over the top of text. This particular technique should not be used any longer, as search engines will view this technique as an attempt to add hidden text, and hidden text will incur a penalty from the engines.

Another technique which could help your Flash ranking is to not compress your SWF files. One of the reasons search engines could not read flash files in the past is that the files are compressed. If the SWF is uncompressed, search engines can read the static text. This technique can be accomplished easily. Upon exporting a Flash file, you can set the compression to "not" if you want your text inside the Flash movie to be readable by the search spiders. However, this is not a good practice, as not compressing your SWF will increase the file size, consequently negating a major benefit to Flash file - a lightweight file.

What Macromedia has Done to Make Flash More Visible to Search Engines
In the past, Google did index Flash files. Anyone can test this fact out by searching in Google using the "filetype" operator to restrict your search. For example, try the following search: "Casino Games filetype:SWF". The SERP will include over 200 Flash files, which are indicated by the "Flash" text to the left of the listing.

Some search engines are now using the Macromedia Flash Search Engine SDK (Software Development Kit). For example, Google, AllTheWeb, Lycos, and other sites can readily display links to Flash content. Flash Search SDK is and open source tool that allows search engines to modify it to suit their needs. With this level of customization, it is likely that the major search engines will modify SDK, making it difficult for website owners to know exactly what information will be pulled out of the SWF file or how it will impact actual rankings.

The Macromedia Flash Search Engine SDK can be found at http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/download/search_engine. According to the Macromedia/Adobe web site, The SDK includes an application named 'swf2HTML'. Swf2HTML extracts text and links from a Macromedia Flash SWF file, and returns the data to an HTML document. Swf2HTML is provided as a compiled application and as a static library for linked library implementation. SDK can interoperate any links that are in the action script so long as adhere to the following criteria:

- The link is contained within single quotes (' ') or double quotes (" "), and

- The link prefix is HTTP, and

- The link suffix is HTM, HTML, CFM, SWF, JPG, JPEG, MP3, or WAV

By default SDK extracts the following text from your flash file:

- Text on stage in the current movie (dynamic text, static text, or input text that has an initial value assigned)

- Text on stage in a movie that is called with movieClip.attachMovie()
Google can see certain text in Flash files now, but how and where certain text gets extracted depends on what you do with that text in the Flash presentation.

For example, text that is static or is used in a motion tween can be read as a single instance with SDK. However, some animation involves converting text into a symbol and then using multiple copies of that symbol to achieve a desired effect. This will create duplicate instances of your text to the SDK output, which may be viewed as duplicate content and not given much importance by Google.

Using the SDK tool, any developer can get the text output from the SWF and see how search engines view the extractable text of any SWF. On a Windows operating system, you can go to the DOS prompt and execute the swf2HTML application very easily. The following is an example from the DOS prompt: C:\sdk\swf2HTML -o test.HTML C:\sdk\crt_webfiles\test.swf

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Techniques Used Historically for Flash
Each Flash file does not need to be uploaded independently and called as a SWF file; rather a Flash file can be embedded in a standard HTML document. One of the best techniques is to create a modular web site, where there are several Flash files which make up the web page combined with standard HTML elements. A hybrid site such as this, works especially well, if your navigation uses traditional HTML links. You can use cascading style sheets to give the appearance of flash text links. This type of hybrid site will always rank better than an all Flash site - all other factors being equal. It's also important to have your HTML page title correct, regardless of anything else. Several search engines look at meta titles first. In addition to the page title, you can add meta tags to the head of the file. Outside of the actual HTML page, off page factors are important. There has been much written in recent articles that reciprocal links are not as important any longer, but certainly, one-way links pointing to your site from highly relevant and high ranking pages will increase your page rank. In addition links from prominent directories, such as Yahoo and Business.com, placed in the most relevant categories will help. One-way inbound links from relevant sites is still the best way to increase your ranking with or without Flash.

There are programming techniques which work while in the Flash authoring environment. While you are in the Flash authoring environment, with your FLA open...click F12. It will generate the HTML page for you. Look at the code of the page; it creates a place for you to put the text and URL's used in the Flash.

New SEO Techniques for Flash

Today there are many techniques which can overcome the limitations of the past, where Flash files are concerned. With the inception of the new Macromedia Flash 8, there are techniques which can be implemented to greatly increase the ability of search engines to index Flash files and even rank for key words.

In the past, SWF files could not have titles. This is one important reason why Flash files didn't rank well. This title limitation has now changed. Flash 8 does allow you to input meta data. Flash 8 defines two fields with meta data for all Flash files. These two fields are Title and Description. You can access the meta data fields under Document Properties. To add meta data, fill in the text fields and the search engines will know what info to display about your Flash file.

SDK is fairly intelligent in terms of recognizing text and links that are embedded in the file. If text is static or dynamically driven by an XML or text file, it can be read. If your content is dynamically driven it must be done so using the latest version of ActionScript 2.0. The SDK does parse ActionScript 2 byte code looking for links. It could conceivably find the link to the XML file that way and hand it back to a search engine.

As referenced earlier, certain text can be modified into a symbol rather than strait text. For example, a button might have the text output two or three times. Alternatively, tweened text has motion associated with the action. Tweens result in a single occurrence in the output from the extraction process. You should also notice that the link text in the Google results page is identical to the first couple of lines of text at the very top of the text extracted by swf2HTML. Armed with the knowledge of how SDK parses your content, you can manipulate text in your Flash Movies more carefully and make your content key word dense, easily indexable, search engine friendly and, with a little more skill, even optimized.

What is the gist of all this? Flash is still not the best solution for a pure SEO-based project, but their have been giant leaps forward by both the search engines and Macromedia in allowing your flash files to be indexed and even rank for the key word phrases you covet.

On Page Search Engine Optimization

By: 2very

If you want your site listed in the Search Engines, first thing to do is the so called, On Page Search Engine Optimization, in other words you must make your pages in a way that the search engines find easy to read. And that, is not difficult at all. Once you know how to do it, you might even be surprised on how easy it can be.

Some search Engines are different then others but they all follow a similar pattern that can be observed.

First I would like to talk about HTML, I am not going to teach you html here, but what I am going to talk about is its importance in a webpage. Some html enthusiasts sometimes are criticized because they want their code to be perfect, well if you can make it perfect why not, what the search engines read when they come to your site is html, so why not make it nice without mistakes so it can read quickly and smoothly. If you can't get a green light from the validator which sometimes can be quite difficult if you are not very familiar with html, try to avoid errors at all cost, and keep the warnings at a minimum. There are many validators around but I suggest you use the http://validator.w3.org/ it's considered the top authority, and it's excellent and easy to use, it tells what's wrong and what you need to do to put it right and it's free.

With that in mind we move on to the name of the html page.
When I first started building websites I use to name my pages: page_01.html,page_02.html or 01.html and 02.html.
The name of the html page is very important and you can use it at your own advantage to attract search engines, a page called page_01.html doesn't mean anything to the search engines, if you are talking about red roses, it makes more sense to call your page red-roses.html or red_roses.html, just from this the search engines know that you want to talk about red roses, and if you carry on talking about red roses, they might get interested with your page.

Next come the so called title tags which are right at the beginning of the code in your page just after the html tag and I would put red roses there as well, that's a way to keep talking about the same thing. If you do a search for what ever you want and look at the results, you will find that your search is present in the title of the results displayed by the search engine and if this website is at the top most of the time you will find your search term in the description as well.

Keywords are not as important as they use to be, but they are still important, use them in the right way, just be specific and that means putting the necessary keywords only, no more than five, and related to the main one which is the title.

In the description include the title and if you can try to include any other key words that you may have, and make sure the description says in a few words what you are going to talk about in the rest of the page. The description is very important because most of the search engines display it on their search results, and you can use it to attract visitor to your page, many webmaster have studied this and use what they call hypnotic words to catch the visitor attention.

The page content has got to have original information preferably all of it new but that could be very difficult to achieve due to the huge amount of information already around the net, but the more the better. The search engines know in a few seconds if the content of your page is new or not. Don't try to cheat them; you might as well be cheating your self. Some people think that SEO is a profession of tricks used to steal the number one spot. That was probably true a few years ago, but these days the search engines have become more sophisticated and there is no tricks really. They are looking for good information so they can give a good service to the millions of people which use them.

Reciprocal Linking – How The Hell Do You Do It?

At the beginning of this year I was thrown in at the deep end, well and truly. I bought an ebooks shop dirt cheap on Ebay, thinking at that time, what a good idea it was but I knew absolutely nothing about the business. I’ve got no regrets and I’ve loved every minute of it. However I wasn’t fully aware how much my life was about to change. Countless hours spent on the computer, studying lots of new programming terminology, trying to understand the importance of keywords, Internet,Web Design,SEO, and linking.!! Probably sounds familiar to many of you.

The thing that came up over and over was to improve your search engine ratings by reciprocal linking. Seemed a good idea, and apparently so simple. “Just paste this piece of html code anywhere on your webpage” was the statement I got from prospective link partners and to cap it all, I had to do it first before they would accept my link.

I was stuck. Experienced website owners will probably laugh at this but to a new site owner with no programming experience that is trying to absorb html, php, dns, ftp and a multitude of other things, believe me this was a real obstacle.

I was particularly worried and confused because I was given explicit instructions not to put html on my php website because it might corrupt the system. If I wanted to link reciprocally how on earth was I supposed to do this?

The real challenge came when I affiliated to Amazon, I of course got the usual “just paste this script” I emailed Amazon for help and got a lovely rapid reply saying that they really couldn’t help because there are so many different types of websites with their100,000 affiliates!!

Next step “Google Search”. “How to paste html on php website” and a variety of other word combinations but although I got a lot of good information, none of it solved my problem. One idea was to use Windows Notepad to make a php file with the link information inside. I put the file on my site but of course it didn’t show. Looking back this was because the file wasn’t in the database.
Next I downloaded an html to php converter programme on free trial. No problem I converted the script to php. But where do I paste it?
I then searched the internet looking for web pages similar to mine. Then I used “view Source” in Windows Explorer to see just how these other pages were set up.

Then the penny finally dropped!!.

I went to my “website/cpanel” then clicked “File Manager” and public html/includes. Located here were four files Header, Footer, Left Column, Right Column. Now for the big decision – remember no programming experience!! – I pasted the php code at the bottom of the Header File leaving a large space between the existing text and my new text so I could remove it if things went wrong. I also took a copy of the existing text, complete, again in case of disaster. I saved the changes. I closed cpanel and logged into my site. To my amazement the Amazon graphic was on the page and functioning correctly, randomly changing the display. But it was totally in the wrong place
Obviously the next step was to move it by erasing my previous change and putting it in the “Left Column”. It was still in the wrong place as it went to the top and I wanted it at the bottom. After a lot of study and experiment I inserted td align="center" above the new script and BINGO it was exactly where I wanted it.

That should have been the end of the task but I couldn’t help but notice that in rest of the page text “echo php” was constantly appearing. If I can only use php why do I have to make this statement? Needless to say I took the original html script and pasted it, it worked just the same.
Now I know where to paste my reciprocal links. This time put them in “Footers” at the bottom of the page using html. It works fine and looks like it should do.

During my experimentation the worst thing that happened was that when I reopened my webpage after alteration I often got “syntax error” I found that it was no big deal I just erased what I had done previously and all returned to normal.

To me, messing with my php files was like messing with the “Holy Grail” at first.

One interesting point. I get dozens of emails every day from the internet gurus making all sorts of claims about how they can change my life etc with their superior knowledge so I wrote to every one of them asking for help on reciprocal linking and I never got one reply.

I have read that lots of websites never make attempts at linking. Is it because they are as hesitant, as I was, to interfere with their files? Maybe they don’t know how to do it and more importantly where to get help on the subject.

In writing this article I will be over the moon if it helps just one person not to go through the trauma and time that I went through..

Good Luck!!
