The 5 Worst Home-Based Business Scams

In a forum devoted to education and careers, a blog devoted to this topic was inevitable - home-based business scams. Anyone who has an email account has gotten an email - if not a thousand - like this:

Usually, the email includes a testimonial or two from people "just like you."

Before I started this business, I used to [insert bad career here]. But I started working [insert home-based business opportunity here] and made $2500 my first month! By my sixth month, I was making $11,000. This business is a dream come true!

Some of these emails can be fairly persuasive, especially if it's been a tight month. I mean, who wouldn't want to earn a little extra money? Then I think of the old adage, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," and I realize I'm probably dealing with a home-based business scam. At that point, the email becomes ridiculous.

But the truth is that thousands - if not tens of thousands - of people fall for these scams every day. Sadly, for many of these people, that decision will be disastrous. Home-based business scams tend to target people who can ill afford such a misstep - the sick and disabled, the elderly, stay-at-home mothers, low-income families, and people lacking a college education. (Note: it's not that people without college educations are less intelligent per se; rather, because they don't have college degrees, chances are they are more inclined to take risks.)

For anyone who's ever received these emails - or who every will - let me identify five of the most common and pernicious home business scams, which I've gleaned from several websites issuing similar warnings. Think of it as a public service announcement.

1. Multi-level Marketing (MLM)

Basically, multi-level marketing entails selling some kind of product or service but also rewards the participant for recruiting other people to join. Typically, early recruits are paid by the entry fees gleaned from new recruits, who in turn must collect their rewards from others. Each level feeds (or builds) off the one after it, which is why MLMs are sometimes referred to as "pyramid schemes." Granted, not all MLMs are true pyramid schemes - which is illegal in most states - but most MLMs still rely on deception in order to succeed. As such, beware of MLM "opportunities" that promise large incomes for selling dubious products and recruiting fellow distributors.

2. Reshipping Fraud

Reshipping involves receiving mail merchandise and then repackaging and reshipping it for a substantial profit. Sounds easy, right? The only problem is that the merchandise was paid for with stolen credit cards, which means you - the reshipper - are acting as a "fence" for stolen goods. Reshipping fraud is relatively new to the realm of home-business fraud; as such, reshipping "opportunities" still appear in legitimate newspapers and websites, which lend them an air of credibility. Don't be fooled. Reshipping fraud is not only illegal but also dangerous.

3. Craft Assembly

The variations on this scam are legion, but essentially it involves a company outsourcing the assembly of its product to you. All you need is a start-up kit and raw materials, which you purchase from the company, of course, and which you can do at home. Once you've assembled the products - toys, magnets, jewelry - you send it back to the company only to find that your products "fail to meet specifications." You're left with a bunch of useless products and no one to sell them to. Beware.

4. Medical Billing

The basic sales pitch with medical billing is that the health care industry is inundated with unprocessed paper claims and there's a need for someone - you - to process these claims electronically. The beauty of this scam is that it's true - there is a need and you can make money processing claims. The training you receive from promoters, while overpriced, will be legitimate. The only problem is that once you've finished your training you have to generate your own business. That's where the scam comes in - promoters tend to over-hype their ability to get you contacts within the medical community. The fact is that few medical-billing entrepreneurs are able to attract clients and earn a reasonable income. The truth is that the medical billing market revolves around several large firms and competition is stiff.

And finally...

5. Envelope Stuffing

The doyen of home-based business scams has been around since the 1920s. One website even referred to it as the "cockroach you just can't eliminate." Basically, this scam involves you sending off a fee to learn how to make money stuffing envelopes from home. Shortly thereafter, you get a letter telling you to place a similar envelope-stuffing ad in magazines and newspapers. That way, people will send money to you to learn how to make money stuffing envelopes. You, in turn, send them a similar letter about placing envelope-stuffing ads in other magazines and newspapers. In short, the way you earn money stuffing envelopes is by propagating the envelope-stuffing scam.

To conclude, let me just observe what these home-based business scams have in common: it's true that they lie, exaggerate, and misrepresent their products and services. That being said, the only reason they work is because people let themselves be carried away by delusions of "getting rich quick" or "making easy money." In other words, these scams, like all confidence games, feed off of greed and, in some cases, desperation. Don't be a victim. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Remember that the only foolproof ways to increase your earning potential are hard work and education.

It appears that most webmasters have come from the world of advertising. Their website content emphasizes "marketing and promotion". Just to prove my point, do a Google search on "marketing promotion". As I write, Google comes up with "about 5,910,000" entries. Gosh imagine the good fortune of a listing on page one! Of course, the number of entries for "marketing promotion" gets shadowed by "sex" which provides you with "about 192,000,000". It's not money and sex; it's sex and money.

Prominent webmasters like Jim Daniels, Cory Rudll,and Kevin Bidwell (one of my favorites) et.al teach you Internet success strategies. Of course, they all started way back in '96 (that's 1996) when aspiring webmasters wanted to know how to succeed.

Someone asked me recently if Cory Rudll's two volume manual collects dust on my desk. Chagrined, I acknowledge, "sitting just to the right of my keyboard" (been there for two years). Then I think of all the other manuals, ebooks purchased to vault my Internet marketing skills.

What then gets you the income so many claim to make? You've read the ads, "so and so made $55,000 in one month" and this was their slowest month. Or, affiliate maven makes $463,000 a year marketing affiliate programs. Each of these testimonials appear attached to some alluring ebook which you "must have" to succeed. Well, hold off before entering your credit card number.

Here are 5 considerations to ponder before thinking about income from your website.

Purpose:

I never gave much credence to business plans; however, you can't get from my house to Boston without a map. Whether you write it down (which is best) or create pictures in your mind, there must be a map. A strategy which defines what steps you take. Strategies begin with brainstorming. Sit down, put a blank paper on your desk, grasp your pen, and write. Write anything that comes to mind relevant to your purpose. Write the not so relevant ideas too; who knows they might turn out to be the most important expression of your brainstorming.

Every endeavor requires preparation. Ever watch a chef work? Every summer I work a weekend at a camp which serves 250 men seven meals. Doesn't sound like much until I observed the chef arrives to work at 3AM. I would get there at 4:15AM in order to dice, chop, stir, and pour in preparation for the next meal. When meals get served, few understand the amount of "prep work" that preceded the meal. No one sees you doing it; it just has to be done. With these extreme examples of missing the mark, you may indeed be looking at one that "they" may actually come close with. The estimated number of people who will be earning a living online is expected to jump to 15 million by 2008.

At this point you may be thinking, "This is all fine and jim dandy, but where do I fit in on the grand scale of things?" Actually, the opportunities are boundless. But is there really any reason the average webmaster could not build their own video or audio based portal? Would that not be a difficult thing to attempt? Well, that used to be the case, but it is not true any more.

Now, based on the fact that you are currently reading this article, I would hazard a guess that the following is true: At some point in the past, possibly even just recently, it occurred to you that building a YouTube-like site might be a fun thing to do. But then you tossed the idea out the window once you discovered that adding audio and video clips to your site can be time-consuming and tedious. Not to mention technically intimidating. But like I said, that no longer has to be the case. In fact, if you are prepared to fork out a few hundred dollars for the software to power your site, you can be up and running in no time flat.

In all likelihood you do not truly want to compete with YouTube for visitors. But maybe that real estate site you had been thinking about could benefit from audio and video feeds. Or perhaps that restaurant guide, or model plane construction website--short how-to videos on the best way to build remotely-controlled planes might be just the thing you need...

Are the ideas starting to bubble up? If so, read on to find out how you can set up a video or audio site painlessly.

So what are the barriers to us as webmasters wanting to set up such a site? Well, you have probably already investigated several multimedia-related web sites to see how they go about presenting audio and video clips to their visitors. Most of these sites now offer streamed content, which is to say the music or the video feed starts playing just a few seconds after you hit the play button. No waiting for a full download to occur. Visitors, even those with high speed connections, simply do not have that kind of patience. So, you must serve the content immediately.

There are two basic ways you can do this. One, you can install a special server that is optimized to stream audio and video files. However, this can cost you an arm and a leg, depending on the server you choose. It is also just one more thing you do not want to have to deal with if you can avoid it. The second option is to go with a simpler method, called progressive streaming, wherein you make a request to your regular web server to stream the file in such a way that it can be played almost as soon as the first batch of bytes is received. This is not as efficient as a dedicated streaming server, but unless you are running a very highly-trafficked site, the results are virtually indistinguishable. This is the option discussed in detail in this article.

Several applications exist on the market to handle progressive, or psuedo, streaming. The difficulty in using them lies in the amount of work it can take to add HTML code to individual pages on your site in order to call the application which will then stream your audio or video content. What you really need is an automated solution of some type. An application that will allow you, or your visitors, to simply upload the content that is to be streamed, and then have all the file storage and HTML link-formatting done for you, behind the scenes.

Fortunately there is at least one application that does all this for you (this is mentioned in the resource box below). In this case the application makes use of a Flash-based client named Wimpy, which exists in several different incarnations. The best known of the Wimpy players is the Wimpy MP3 Player which allows MP3s to be played from a fancy Flash-based jukebox. The appearance of this player is controlled by a skin, and there are literally dozens to choose from--some of which contain rotating dials, flickering volume bars, and so on. An alternative to placing a jukebox on your pages is to simply place a button that allows an MP3 track to be played or paused. This is the Wimpy Button Player. It is useful for pages where you are going for simplicity, or page real estate is at a premium.

But Wimpy can do more than just play MP3s. If you want to serve video files from your site you can elect to use the Wimpy AV Player. This version allows you to load an entire video playlist, just as the Wimpy MP3 Player does. But my preference for video presentation is the Wimpy WASP Player. This client will play just one video at a time, but it can be controlled with javascript commands, so it offers more in the way of programmable and presentation options. You can embed the videos right into your web pages, or you can elect to have them pop up when a visitor clicks on a link.

By using a solution that combines all these Wimpy clients into a single transparent application, and which also allows visitors to review the uploaded audio or video files, you have at your disposal just the tool you need to create a YouTube-like site complete with visitor reviews. Hopefully I have managed to convey the idea that creating such a site is fairly straightforward. Converting a MySQL Injection Script for Use in Microsoft SQL Server

MySQL Server is the most widely used database management system in the world, primarily because it is open source and free. Hence, most databases you may get from outside sources will probably be in the form of a MySQL injection script. This is fine if you use MySQL for your own website databases, but if you use Microsoft SQL Server the script will require a little editing before it will work.

The first thing you'll need to do is remove any comment lines from the script. MySQL comment lines begin with a pound character ("#") and MSSQL comment lines begin with a double dash ("--"), which makes them completely incompatible and will product a syntax error if you try to import a MySQL injection as-is into MSSQL Server. So to get started, open up Query Analyzer if you haven't already (the easiest way to run scripts in MSSQL Server), load up the injection script you are working with, and remove any comment lines (look for the pound symbol). It is easier just to remove them than it is to try and convert them to propery MSSQL syntax, and they are just comment lines anyway so it won't affect anything.

The bulk of your script will most likely be a series of INSERT statements, and these aren't very different in MSSQL as compared to MySQL. However, your script may also include at the beginning a small section that creates the database table where the data will be inserted, and this CREATE TABLE statement is likely to be VERY different in MSSQL, depending on how complicated it is (there could be primary and secondary keys, constraints, even triggers -- the more of these the more the syntax changes from MySQL to MSSQL). Since this is likely to give you the most trouble, it is recommended that you create the database tables manually in Enterprise Manager rather than trying to convert the syntax of the script snippet. Looking at the code, you should be able to easily identify the fields and their types (such as int, varchar, text, etc). Once you have the database table created in Enterprise Manager, delete the snippet of code from the injection script that deals with the creation of the table.

Now all that remains is to convert the INSERT statements to the proper syntax for MSSQL Server. There are a few different steps to accomplish this, but none of them are very complicated. The first difference in syntax between MySQL and MSSQL is that in MySQL, all statements must end with a semicolon (";"). In MSSQL, this is a syntax error. The easiest way to remove these semicolons is to do a search and replace, and since the INSERT statements should be passing a series of values for each record of data, each line of the MySQL script will most likely end with a paranthesis and semicolon (");"). So, do a search and replace and replace all instances of ");" with just the parenthesis ")".

Another difference that you will have to correct for is that your MySQL injection script will most likely use an acute accent / reverse apostrophe (ANSI character 180) around the table name on each line. In MSSQL Server, you can encapsulate an object's name (such as a table's) with either square brackets ("[" and "]") or nothing at all. However, you probably don't want to do a blanket search-and-replace of the reverse apostrophe character, because that character might be used in the data of each record (especially if the data contains text, such as an article body). The easiest way to correct for this difference in syntax, then, is to do another search and replace, and replace all instances of the reverse apostrophe AND the table name, for example "`articles`" with just the table name "articles".

Finally, there will also be numerous occurrences of apostrophes throughout the text fields of the data, and the apostrophe character is used to encapsulate strings in the script. In MySQL, the way to escape an apostrophe so that the script knows it is part of the text and not the end of the string, is to use a backslash followed by the apostrophe ("\'"). In a MSSQL Server script, the proper way to escape an apostrophe is to use a double apostrophe ("''"). So, one more search and replace is called for -- this time, replace all instances of [\'] with [''] (double apostrophe, NOT an actual quotation mark).

Once these steps are all complete, you are ready to run the script! There shouldn't be any other syntax changes you'll have to make, but don't worry if there are because when you execute the injection script it will tell you if there are any errors. If everything was corrected properly and there are no errors, you should get a series of "1 row(s) affected" responses -- one for each INSERT statement in the script. If you want to verify that the proper number of records are in the database table, you can execute a "select count(*) from tablename" statement to count the rows of the table -- it should match the number of lines in the injection script, give or take a few for blank lines, etc.

That's it! Your options are now increased tremendously, because now you can use either MySQL or MSSQL injection scripts to import acquired databases into your database system. If you use MySQL as your dbms, you can do this process in reverse to convert a MSSQL injection script into a MySQL one. Either way, you now can import data using an injection script from either of the two most popular database management systems in the world. Now, where to obtain such databases or injection scripts is another question entirely, and beyond the scope of this article. Suffice it to say that there are numerous sources on the internet where you can purchase or acquire databases -- a good one is www.WebContents.org. I think you will find that not only is it much easier to acquire content databases for your users than it is to build them from scratch, but it also is an easy way to add a lot of new, fresh content for your users with a minimal amount of time and effort. Using this method, you can get databases of articles, jokes, quotes, recipes, etc, and put them right on your website or any other database-integrated application, with very little work. Good luck!

Finding your website is one thing, but knowing what to do once you get there is quite another. In this article we will discuss the importance of website navigation and how it can make or break your site.
The aim of a web site's navigation is simply to allow users to get to the content they require. For sites that have a large number of sections and web pages (and information sites can be one of these) the navigation plan has to be properly researched and designed. You have to consider different types of visitors and simulate the most common steps they would take to find what they want on your site and the navigation plan has to optimize this movement. For example the steps required from searching a catalog of items, selecting from the catalog, adding them to a shopping cart, proceeding to check out, to entering the payment particulars is a specific sequence that should be facilitated by the navigation system. If the sequence is haphazard, it could lead to frustration or the user may miss an important step and you would have an aborted sale.
To find their way about, users need to know two things:
Where they are now
How to go elsewhere
Navigation does not exist in isolation; good site organization is a prerequisite for a coherent navigation system.
Objectives of a Navigation System
Navigation can be broken into two primary types, Location Indicators and Navigation Controls
Location Indicators
Location indicators let users know where they are in the site at the moment. It needs to be borne in mind that users coming from outside your site can enter at any page, not necessarily on a 'main' page. They need to be able to orientate themselves.
Equally it is important that users navigating around your site have a clear idea of where they are both in absolute terms and in relation to other content.
Location information should appear on every page of the site, in the same place and in the same style. Location indicators should tell the user precisely where they are and this should be clear even to a user who has entered the site at an internal page. The location indicator should be identifiable for what it is and make sense in the context of other navigation.
In simple sites a page banner - text or graphic - naming the page will be sufficient. For this to work the page name should also appear in the main navigation so that it is relevant within the overall structure of the site.
Color can be used. For example a different color background, contrast color or sidebar in each part of the site. To be really effective the color change should be reflected in the navigation.
Using ‘breadcrumbs’ on every page is a good idea. Breadcrumbs show you a series of hierarchical links that you have used to go from page to page within a section. Using breadcrumbs is like leaving a trail of the path you have followed. The breadcrumbs appear at the top of the content section, just below the main navigation template. Each element in the breadcrumb is a link to that section or subsection. This helps in avoiding a series of back buttons allowing the user to directly go back to the main section page or another sub section. More importantly, it always shows the context of the page that is being viewed and how it belongs to a section or sub-section.
Navigation Controls
Navigation controls are the main navigation links; they allow users to move around the site. Whether they comprise images or text they should be predictably located in the same place, and with the same appearance, on each page.
These have several purposes
To allow users to move about within the site
To tell users what information is available at the link
To work with location indicators to orientate users
A good navigation control:
Is clear: it looks like navigation
Leads to obvious content - users have a good idea what they will find if they click
Is consistent with other navigation controls
Is predictable in its style and location on the page
There is no mystery to usability. It simply involves creating a site, which is accessible to the majority of people, is easy to use and get around and delivers on its promises. You can have a site that meets the most important standards of usability by planning it well and always keeping the end user in mind. Remember that web sites should not be designed for their owners - they should be designed for their users.
Problems with usability could be said to stem from just two sources: the site itself and the user. In fact the site is always at fault; if a user, however experienced or inexperienced, has problems navigating, getting information or understanding the site.
While websites have become far more complex, web users have become less rather than more experienced as more and more people go online. It is a mistake to think that the majority of users will be web or even computer savvy and will understand subtle clues about content. Most will not.
So take these words of advice and review/plan your navigation links accordingly. Just remember - if the customer gets lost, so will your sale.

The answer is clear.

Is ASP.NET Too Hard?

On a listserv I'm on some folks were discussing the adoption rate of ASP.NET compared to other server-side Web programming technologies. Someone mentioned that they had read that there were more new projects being started with classic ASP than with ASP.NET. Even though ASP.NET has been out for several years, more developers are still using classic ASP, and not just for maintaining old projects, but for starting new ones too! Why is this? I can only think of two reasons:

- Said employee's company has not yet adopted .NET.
- Said employee finds ASP.NET over his or her head.

Hardly a week goes by where I don't receive at least one email from a 4Guys reader or from a reader of one of my books that goes something like: “I am having trouble doing X in ASP.NET. This was so easy in classic ASP!!” This begs the question: is ASP.NET too hard?

Part of classic ASP's appeal was that non-programmers could quickly pick it up and start using it. The concepts behind ASP were simple enough - procedural programming in an English-like syntax (VBScript). Where things got more tricky - like needing to connect to a database, read a text file, use a regular expression, etc. - there was always a plethora of code samples available online, and since ASP pages were simple text files, one could just cut and paste the script into their page and give it a whirl.

ASP.NET is a different beast altogether. It's object-oriented. It's compiled. While it is possible to develop using Notepad, it's not easy. Trying out new source code is not as easy as cut and paste. Sure, Visual Studio .NET makes many facets of Web application development a breeze. Need to display data on a page? Simply drag a DataGrid onto the Designer, and then a connection object; set some properties through VS.NET's GUI, and you're done. Trouble is, if you want to deviate from the path the GUI tools provide, you have to write code. And ASP.NET code, to the non-programmer, may seem backwards and confusing. For example, consider the following: you are displaying monthly sales data in a Web page and want to make the background color of the month's data red if the sales goal for that month was not met. In classic ASP, you can see where your HTML table is built up, and non-programmers can intuitively reason the precise location where such a check must go. In ASP.NET, you need to know that the DataGrid has an ItemDataBound event that fires for each item added to the DataGrid. For someone whose background is not in computer science, the notion of creating an event handler may be foreign.

Now I'm not decrying ASP.NET in favor of classic ASP. The last classic ASP page I created was back in 2000, and I don't plan on ever doing classic ASP again. I love ASP.NET, but I have a computer science background. I've talked to folks who lack the background, or who work with people who lack the background, and they notice just how much trouble these people have transitioning from ASP to ASP.NET. Part of the power of ASP (and Visual Basic) was that it empowered non-programmers to create computer solutions, but .NET has raised the entry-level, for better or for worse.

So what does the future bode for these non-programmers? Do they migrate from programming to some other task? Keep doing classic ASP / Visual Basic? Start using .NET once the tools become so advanced that virtually no code has to be written by the so-called “developer?”

Integrating XML into SAP Business Connector

When the internet was first introduced, all websites were written in HTML. HTML was the only programming language used to describe and display data on the World Wide Web. It was simple and fairly easy to learn. As time progressed, programmers started to realize that they were being stymied by HTML. Web designers wanted to be able to describe data more effectively. This need for a better way to deal with data resulted in the development of a new specification called XML.

What is XML? XML stands for Extensible Markup Language. So, just like HTML, XML is a markup language. A markup language is any language that is used to describe or define information and text. XML is not a substitute for HTML. It is to be used in conjunction with HTML.

HTML focuses on describing how data or text is supposed to be displayed. The XML language does something totally different. XML describes what the data is. So, XML is not something that is apparent on a web page, because it does not actually do anything. As information and data presented on the World Wide Web became more complex, XML was invented to effectively structure, store, and send this information.

What makes XML truly unique is that there are no predefined tags like we have with HTML. All of the tags used in HTML have already been defined, such as the paragraph tag, the header tag, and all the various style tags. XML is not defined. You can make your own tags!

So, the question is, why do we need XML? Why do we need a more versatile specification like XML to describe data? After all, HTML works fine if used properly, so why do we need XML? Well, the answer is simple. XML is a device independent, cross-platform language.

This is extremely important, because people are now using a wide variety of gadgets to connect to the internet, as almost every electronic device on the market now comes equipped with email and internet access. Cell phones, palm tops, computers installed in automobiles, they all have built-in web access. Each of these devices display text and graphics differently, and utilize different platforms and a variety of web browsers.

As a result, someone using a cell phone to access a certain web site may not be able to view the data on that website properly because the browser running on that cell phone might not be able to properly display the HTML. The platforms that run on some of these newfangled products and devices are simply not 100% compatible with HTML.

XML solves this problem by making sure that the most important data on your website can be displayed across all of these different platforms. This is what makes XML so valuable. The other important features of XML is that it enables data to be exchanged between incompatible systems, and because XML files are plain text files, basically anyone using any system can view the contents of the text file.

So, if you are a programmer, you need to learn to use XML for describing, storing, and sending data on the web. With so many different means available to connect to the internet, you should learn to use programming languages like XML.

The Right Time To Become An Infopreneur

Whenever I talk to people about becoming an Internet infopreneur, I hear two objections - from different sections of the audience.

One group says, "Oh, the time's not yet ripe for this sort of thing"

And the other says, "But, isn't it already too late?"

The fact is, there is no 'perfect' time to start being an infopreneur.

Let's face it. There's nothing new about compiling data into information. And there's nothing new about selling the processed product. Why, even the Internet is no longer 'new' - though it is constantly evolving.

What is, however, relatively new and unexplored, is the concept of selling information products over the Internet to various niche audiences.

Is the time right to start doing this?

Just look at these numbers.

E-commerce over the Internet in the U.S. for the third quarter of 2006 amounted to $27.5 BILLION, a 4.5% increase over the 2nd quarter and a 20% growth over last year (Source: U.S. Census Bureau News, Nov.2006). For this study, ecommerce was defined as the value of goods and services sold online.

Annual spending per buyer increased from $457 in 2001 to $784 in 2006.

The trend is reflected around the world. Below are the total worldwide eCommerce Revenues for 2004

So what are they buying? And more specificaly, for you as an infopreneur, the important question is: "Are they are buying INFORMATION?"

The answer is a resounding "Yes".

In 2004, more than 14 million Americans made digital content purchases - each for less than $2. TowerGroup forecast that by 2009, the market for micropayments would grow to $11.5 billion in revenue.

One area in which micropayments are growing in the U.S. is for online paid content. Despite double-digit increase for micropayments, at $12.8 million in revenue, the share is only a 1 percent of total online paid content revenues. Do the math - you'll see just how vast the potential is for selling content online.

43.6% of all purchases over $50 were made on Business Content - and that's good news if you are targeting that market. More and more consumers will buy low-priced content online, with music continuing to lead the way.

In 2005, data from Nielsen NetRatings's Holiday eShopping Index showed a 33 percent increase in online purchases over the previous year. Books, music, and video combined were the fastest growing category, with a 238% increase.

Are you convinced yet? Or maybe a smaller, more personal sampling will prove the point more forcefuly.

In my own infopreneuring business, the revenues and profits from the first half of 2006 were higher than entire 2005.

A few marketing changes may have impacted these figures, but my instinctive analysis is that more people are buying specialized information online, are willing to pay more for useful information, and when satisfied they are getting good quality stuff, are buying more of it to meet their growing and changing needs.

And that change has doubled my sales in a year! So, you tell me. Is the time right for you to start doing this?

How to install and run phpAdsNew?

What is phpAdsNew? It is great script written in PHP which can be used to manage different ad campaigns on your website. PhpAdsNew supports banners of any size (including flash banners), pop-ups, text ads and many different types of rich media ads. How to install phpAdsNew?

First, ensure that your web hosting provider offers PHP support (PHP 4.0.4 or higher) and MySQL database (3.23.3 or higher). Then download the zip or tgz package and unzip it to your hard drive. You can use WinZip or Total Commander to do this. Now upload the files to your web host. Change the permissions of the config.inc.php file using "chmod a+w config.inc.php". This tutorial is for folks who do not yet have a web site of their own. It will explain how to put your own custom web site on the web without paying big bucks.

Have you been contemplating having your own web site but keep putting it off for one reason or another? Maybe you’re marketing a few affiliate programs and promoting those affiliate URLs. Well, as you learned from the article in the last issue of my BizWeb E-Gazette, your own custom web site is the first step in promoting ANY business online, even those affiliate programs.

Okay, so what are you waiting for?

If you think that setting up a custom web site is expensive, think again. The total cost can be less than a few hundred bucks and some of your time. Once your site is up, the only ongoing costs are monthly web hosting charges, which can be as low as $20 - $40 per month plus yearly domain fees of just $35. Now that’s cheap!

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on getting your own custom site up...

1. Lay out your basic design.

Do this step on paper first. Draw out what you want your main entry page, or home page to look like. Keep it simple and uncluttered. Be sure it includes a short description of how your site will help your web site visitors. (These are the folks who you’ll be targeting the site to -- take some time and figure out who they are before you start!)

Then, draw out a few more pages to link that home page to. A few examples would be a page that describes your company or yourself, a page that offers free information about your area of expertise, and a page with your best product/ service/opportunity that you plan to promote.

2. Once you have a basic layout of what your site will look like, you need to design it on your computer.

There are many ways to do this. You can go out and buy one of those 800 page books on html, the code used to design web pages, or you can go the easy route. The easy route is to purchase a WYSIWYG (stands for What You See Is What You Get) web design program. There are many programs to choose from in today’s market. These programs are the easiest way to design a web site, especially for the first time. Most of these programs cost $100 or less.

3. Once your site is laid out on your computer, you’ll need to decide on a domain name for your site.

Registering your own domain name means that web surfers will be able to connect to your web site by entering www.yourname.com. Here are a few tips to help you select your domain name.

a. Avoid using any character that is not a letter or number. Many newbies do not know where to find the '-' or '_' characters, for instance. You want the name to be easy to type.

b. Avoid using the numeral '1' or '0' in your domain name. Many people will confuse these with the small letters 'l' and 'o'. The last thing you want is someone getting frustrated when they are trying to connect to your site.

c. Use a domain name that is easy to remember and has something to do with your business. Once you settle on a name, it’s also a good idea to do a trademark search to make sure the name is not already under trademark by another company. The last thing you want is to be forced to switch domain names once you get going full swing.

4. Select a company to host your web site.

Okay, your web site is designed and you have a domain name picked out. So why do you have to hire a company to host your site?

Well actually, you ’could’ host the pages on your own computer. After all, a hosting company will provide just that to you, a computer. But in order to do it yourself, you would need a 24 hour connection to the web, in the form of a super-fast phone connection known as a T1 or T3. These digital connections cost over a thousand bucks a month. Therefore, hiring a web host who already has multiple T’s is a much more cost-effective solution for small businesses.

Your web host will maintain your 24hr connection to the web, making sure surfers can connect to your site at all times. Therefore, it’s important to hire the right company. 5. Transfer your files to your new web hosting company.

This is a step that many newbies have problems with. Basically, you’ll be transferring your newly designed web pages from your own computer to the computer at your web hosting company.

Although most WYSIWYG web design programs come with a 'web publishing' interface, I’ve found the few I’ve tried to be clumsy and slow. Rather than using the web publishing interface in your design program, I suggest downloading an 'FTP' (stands for File Transfer Protocol) program from the web. These cost in the $30 range and they make uploading your site to your host, a breeze.

Here are a few simple and effective FTP programs you can use to put your site up:

This is the program I use to upload web pages to my site. Its simple drag and drop interface simplifies uploading new pages to my web site. And when making changes to existing pages, I just use my mouse to drag and drop the new page to my web host computer and it replaces the old one.

This is one of the more popular choices among veteran webmasters. Its easy and intuitive interface makes managing your web site a breeze. No wonder it’s the world’s most popular FTP client for Windows.

Once you’ve downloaded an FTP program, spend an hour or two getting used to it. You’ll be using it a lot as a new webmaster!

That’s it! You now have each step laid out in an easy to follow checklist. And remember, your web site is never finished! Effective web sites are sites that get updated on a regular basis.

404 Error Pages - What are they and how do you create one?

We’ve all seen them, you’ve been browsing a website and you click a link and nothing loads apart from the words ‘404 Error’ along with the usual stuff.

So what is a 404 Error page? The 404 Error page, basically informs the user that the server cannot find the file they are looking for. However, instead of using the default 404 Error page you can create your own, this is how you do it.

First, you need your .htaccess file which should be within your web site directory. If you cannot find it you will need to create one. You will have to contact your host asking them how you would go about creating or editing this file. They may want you to use a text editor and then upload it, or they may want you to use a PICO editor and create or edit the file on the server.

How you have access to the .htaccess file lets edit it. Add this line to the .htaccess file:

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.yourdomain.com/404page.html

Make sure this line is kept on online. This is where your 404 Error page is kept.

Now you’ve change the .htaccess file you need to create the page. This is simply a normal HTML document. Once you’ve created the HTML document, save it and call it 404page.html. Now the next step is to upload the .htaccess file and the page to the server.

Now that is done your next step is to turn it on. This is done by setting the CHMOD attribute to 644. You can do this via telnet or some FTP programs. If your going to telnet into your server, use the following command:

chmod 644 .htaccess

Now test to see if it’s worked. Just go to a page that doesn’t exist on your server and you should see your new 404 Error page. If not, then make sure the CHMOD is set correctly, and if that doesn’t help, you may want to ask your hosting company for support.

Use HTML Email at Your Own Risk

I realize that hoards of new people are coming online every week. And, I can only HOPE that's the excuse for this, because I don't have time for idiot management, BUT ...

PLEASE learn to use text format email! You probably get a bazillion ezines already and 99% of them are done in TEXT. There's a REASON for that! Take the clue!

This html email is a PITA. How am I supposed to read what you wrote over your jungle background? How am I supposed to read the part that you laid over your dark blue border because you haven't learned how to handle a table yet?

Can YOU read it? No? Then, why are you sending it to ME? Think I have powers you don't have?

Even without those silly backgrounds, I STILL don't want your html email! How am I supposed to read your pale yellow text on white? Do you send your off-line business correspondence looking that ridiculous? It's black type on white. Period!

If you want to be an artiste - do it on your personal (not business) web site! DON'T do it in my email. DON'T make ME change formats just so your fancy junk will copy into the reply.
And, do you READ the lists where you send that html email? Haven't you SEEN the mess it makes on the lists? Or, do you only write to the lists and not read them?

Haven't you noticed that YOUR html message looks like hieroglyphics? Haven't you noticed that all messages don't look that way? Don't you think there might be an answer for that? Do you want people to read it or not?

If I could figure out how to do it, I'd make a filter that would bounce all html email. It would attach an autoresponder message to the sender of the obnoxious stuff. Here's what it would say ...

"Your email has just been dumped into my D-U-M folder, never to be seen by me.
I don't want to see your adorable puppy dogs and kitty cats blocking the words. I don't care about your gorgeous parrot background. I don't want blinking banners and cutsie graphics in my email files. If you want to send me a display of orchids, call the florist.

I refuse to go blind trying to read your pink, lavender, yellow - or ANY color print. Black will do very nicely, thank you. So try again - try in TEXT format - and your email will reach my in-box. Send me a proper business letter and - lo and behold! - I'll even respond. Just like magic!"

Joomla - Why Use It?

Why use a complex piece of software rather than just putting up a few pages?

When the Internet got started, all websites were simple pages in very simple HTML. They existed as a page or several pages on a site. The browser went to those sites, the browser presented those files to you and you just read them or looked at the contents and that was about all that happened.

In the last few years, the open source community has made several software systems available that greatly empower websites. It adds functionality, it adds security, and it does many things that formerly required a lot of experience and expertise to put together a website that could do what Joomla does.

CMS. Officially Joomla is called a Content Management System or CMS. That title means that it knows how to handle the content of your site, where the content is the words in an article that you write, or the pictures that you display on the pages, or the movies or audio clips that you play. How all that content is presented to the viewer is controlled by the software that we call Joomla.

There are other CMS systems out there. Several of them are free and there are a lot of commercial systems. But Joomla is one of the well known open source packages that is free to be used by anyone.

Joomla Versus the Old Way. The reason Joomla is valuable compared to building a website by hand, one page at a time, is that Joomla organizes everything and provides functionality that's been de-bugged, tested, and used by hundreds of other people - so that with little effort you can install a complex website.

Once it's installed, the administrative capabilities built into Joomla allow you to maintain that website easily.

What does maintenance mean? A healthy growing website needs to constantly add content to that site. Joomla provides tools to add content and functionality to the site. It also supplies functions that you need for a general purpose website. It comes with contact pages for sending email from visitors without spammers hijacking that function. It allows you to add advertisements to your web pages easily. It allows you to edit files, and change templates to modify and customize the appearance of the website.

How to Learn Joomla. Joomla is a complex tool. How do you learn to use it? First, the Joomla community is very large. That means there are many tutorials and active forums which are excellent sources of information. For example, at Website - Do It Yourself you can find step by step procedures for installing, modifying, and maintaining a Joomla website.

More helpful functions. There are other perks to a Joomla installation. There is a strong community of developers that provides modules, plug-ins, and add-ons. These are easily installed into Joomla and give you such things as forums, community-oriented services, email lists, and other tools. You can customize your site - for free - far beyond what you could do with even a limited budget. There are hundreds of add-on modules that provide added functionality. Most of them are free, although there are commercial modules as well.

So if you want an extremely easy, fast, high-performance way to build your website, you couldn't go wrong installing Joomla and giving it a whirl.

Understanding Adsense Report

When you log into your Google Adsense account, you are automatically taken to the page where you can view all your Adsense activity. On the Reports tab, you’ll see “Today’s Earnings.” This is the approximate amount you have earned today in your Google Adsense account. Earnings are not final at this point and could be adjusted for invalid clicks or fees.

It’s interesting to look at the breakdown. As you can see, Adsense for Content, which refers to the targeted ads appearing on the pages in which you have written content, is listed first. Here you will see the number of page impressions listed in the first column. While a page impression is generally the same as a page view, that is not always the case. For a more detailed definition of a page impression, see Google Adsense support, click on Your Adsense Account and then click on Your Adsense Report.

Next, you’ll notice the number of clicks. This refers to the number of times “your ads” were clicked on.

Page click through rate or CTR is in the next column shown as a percentage. It represents the percentage of the time an ad was clicked on after viewing your page.

Page CPM which stands for effective cost per thousand impressions. It is calculated by dividing total earnings by the number of page impressions in thousands.

Don’t be intimidated by these statistics. The bottom line, your earnings, is what really counts. As you become more familiar with Google Adsense, statistics will become like second nature. First, just start.

Get Returned Visitors

As the proud publisher of a website I'm sure you have spent a considerable amount of time and effort to attract traffic to your site. It's not difficult to realize how it is to your advantage to get repeat visitors to your website, rather than to constantly be relying on finding someone new. A visitor who has previously viewed your website offerings is much more likely to become your customer than a first time visitor. To this end, I would like you to consider the following suggestions.

Update your website pages frequently. Stagnant sites are more likely to be dropped by some search engines than a site that is dynamic. You may even think about placing a date counter on the page to show when it was last updated. The search engines will spider your site more often, and your visitors are more inclined to return on a regular basis to see what's new.

Offer additional value on your website. You can place links to affiliate and partner sites and products and request that they do the same for you. It is also effective to promote their books or videos as long as these products relate to your industry and are not in competition with your own product. You can invite customers to ‘opt in’ to get discounts and special offers. Place a link on your site to ask customers to ‘opt in’ to get a monthly newsletter or valuable coupons.

Place a “Book Mark” or “Add This Site to Your Favorites” link on your home page to encourage visitors to return. Add a link titled “Recommend this site to a Friend” so that the visitor can email your website link, with a pre-written title, for example, “Thought you might be interested in this”, just by clicking on it. In other words, make it as easy as possible for your visitors to return to your website and to invite their friends to do the same.

Brand your website so that visitors can easily see that they are on “your” site. Use consistent colors, logos and slogans throughout the site and always include a “Contact Us” link on each page. Create a page titled “Our Policies” that clearly explains your philosophy and principles in customer relations. Also post your privacy policy as well so that clients know they are secure when they visit your site. Create a FAQ page which addresses and clarifies the most likely issues about your product or your company that are likely to be asked about. This will help to resolve most of the customers concerns in their first visit to your site.

Ensure that each page on your website has proper titles and keywords so that your customer can find their way back to your site if they lose the book mark. Never, never, NEVER! spam a visitor, who has opted in for newsletters or information, with unsolicited emails. If they later decide that they want to “opt out” of your newsletter or other mail, be sure you take them off the mailing list immediately. They may return if they like your products. But they will surely not come back if you continue to flood their email box with mails they consider “junk mail” or spam. Just remember to give your visitors plenty of reasons to want to revisit your website, and make it as simple as you can for them. They will be back.

What Is This RSS, XML, RDF, and Atom Business?

It's been a long day at work and you're in no mood to cook dinner or go out. Time to count on the reliable pizza delivery guy. The order is called in and he promptly arrives with smokin' hot pizza within 30 minutes as promised. If it were only that easy with a picky family where no one can agree on the same restaurant for dinner. One wants Mexican, another wants Chinese, and another wants a burger and Mexican. Instead of running to three different places, you call a delivery service that goes to all of them and brings it to you. What could be easier in getting a meal without cooking it or fetching it?

RSS, XML, RDF, and Atom are the food delivery guy of the Internet. The content they deliver is mixed and cooked elsewhere on the Internet just like the meal isn't made on your door step and the acronym fellows bring the content to you via software or an online application. Instead of trying to remember all the places where you like to go to get the latest news, it all comes to you once you order your food.

Click on any of those orange or blue RSS, XML, or RDF buttons and you see unreadable text. Some of it is readable, but reading between the is slow and difficult. In this case, you've got the raw ingredients of the content known as a feed. To make it easily readable, download a feed reader that can interpret (aggregate) the ingredients or sign up for an online service that can do the same.

When the software or application is ready to go, click on the orange or blue button (or "Syndicate This Page," or whatever is along these lines) and copy the resulting URL from the address box. Paste it into the application to cook the ingredients where it's delivered to you ready for your enjoyment.

Syndication is a not a new concept on the Internet, but it’s growing in popularity as more Web sites and newsletters are churning content to turn it into syndicated files, which are fed into an aggregator. Think of it as the content that's ready to travel anywhere it needs to go. Grab the feed and feed it to the aggregator, another way of bookmarking (or creating a favorite) a site because you wish to come back again another time. But how often did you go back to the site through your bookmarks / favorites?

Instead of schlepping from site to site in search of information, I have it all in front of me via the aggregator. The feeds are sorted in folders by topic for easy finding. If I'm writing about the latest virus or worm, then I open the security folder with the security-related feeds and scan them. Scanning content through aggregators is easier than on a Web site because it's in one folder with headlines and maybe a short summary. On a Web site, you're only getting the benefit of that site's news and no where else. The folder has news from over ten resources including blogs, news sites, and newsletters.

Any content can be syndicated. It's a matter of having the backend process in place, which is dependent on the application used for managing the content. If a site doesn't have such resources, then there is software for entering content to create a file with the feed for posting on the site.

Most aggregators have exporting capabilities so the feed can be shared with others interested in the same topic. If you're interested in my security feeds, I can export them into, in most cases, an OPML file and you can import it into your aggregator.

Spam filters are preventing readers from getting newsletters or they get lost in the spam pool. Offering a feed for the newsletter is a compromise. Readers can get the content, only instead of it coming to the emailbox, it comes through the aggregator. It's a way around spam. Like everything else, it has its advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:

Filters can't stop the newsletter from reaching its destination.
The recipient will get it - if the server is down, it'll download next time and email can get lost.
The feed can be syndicated providing more exposure for your content.

Disadvantages:

Rely on readers to open aggregators like they open email client, but some aggregators are built-in with an email client like NewsGator and there are online aggregators like Bloglines, which can be your home page.
Metrics won't be as complete, but it's still there through the links.
Not as pretty as HTML-based newsletters.

If the feed is automatically created, what have you got to lose? You're providing another way for your readers to get your content just like you can get pizza in different ways: go to the restaurant, have it delivered, or make it at home. More applications are adding syndication capabilities, which make the process effortless. Some have said they won’t read something unless it has a feed.

Syndication works better than bookmarks. With bookmarks, you click on a site that might have the security information and arrive there to find it doesn't. So, back to the bookmarks to click on another site. Lather, rinse, repeat. With aggregators, there is no jumping from site to site. Scan the headlines right there until you find what you need.

There was a time when we didn't have the option to have pizza delivered to our doorstep. When we're too tired, we know we can rely on the delivery guy. In term of content, expect to see it show up at your doorstep more often than the pizza guy plus it's cheaper with the cost only coming from the software though there are many free options available. Syndication is here to stay and should be added to a company’s communication toolbox rather than as a replacement. Witness it by watching for RSS, XML, RDF, and Atom out there.

Server Side Includes (SSI) with ASP

People often have identical sections of code spread throughout many
ASP pages, typically code at the top of the page (usually referred to
as the header) and the lower part of the page (the footer). Similarly,
you may have code that performs a certain set of instructions that you
are repeating across multiple pages. Consider an example:-

Ok, ok... it's simple, but imagine that you used this on multiple pages. What's wrong with this picture?

Well... you don't have to think about that long before realising
that if you ever wanted to change something about that piece of code,
you'd have your work cut out. you would have to change every page...
everyone has done this at some stage and luckily most usually take the
steps to learn a way around this problem.

If we could save our valuable chunk of code into a file and have
that file accessed whenever we needed the code, then we no longer have
a problem when it comes to changing things, as we simply update one
file. Include files or Server Side Includes (SSI) as they are more
commonly known are a powerful way to not only save time when it comes
to maintaining and updating a site, but also increase efficiency and
speed of that site too!

Ok, lets see how we use an include file... to start with we need to
use one of two methods. The first one allows for including files
relatively. By that I mean relative to the directory the ASP file that
is using the include file resides. The second method includes files
virtually. Including files virtually means that the path is taken from
the root directory.

Consider that we are going to have a file (/main/somefile.asp) include another file (/includes/someinclude.asp).

To demonstrate, relative inclusion, look at this:-

Note the slight difference between the two methods. With virtual
inclusion, you can move the file that calls upon the include file
anywhere without affecting the outcome, because the path is always
relative to the root. The same cannot be said however for relative
inclusion. If you move a file that is using relative inclusion to a
different directory, you'll most likely find the relative path is no
longer correct.

From the examples above, you may also notice that both methods, when
calling the include do so OUTSIDE of the ASP script block. This because
#include declarations are not interpreted by ASP. Include files are
included before a single line of ASP is processed which means the
following WONT work:-

We were attempting to perform a dynamic include and I would be the
first to admit that the above would be very useful indeed if in fact it
were possible. I do intend to cover a few methods that work around this
set back but I know you will now be itching to get started right away
on using include files to even worry about this, so I will cover it in

The benefit to this approach is that you can have your store customized to do exactly what you want it to do. The biggest drawback to this though, is simply the expense of hiring a staff of designers to create what you are looking for.
Buy an existing script from a programmer and add it to an existing website but you would have to have some knowledge of programming or scripting to properly implement the script and properly integrate it into your existing website.
The problem here is pre-built scripts are difficult to configure or integrate exactly the way you want them to appear or behave, since they have only the options that the programmer (who knows nothing about your business) decided to put in.
Purchase a pre-built online store website, complete with shopping cart and payment processing. There are many variations of this type of service on the web. You can purchase stand alone store systems, or stores already integrated into virtual shopping malls.
The benefit to this sort of system is that you don't need to hire designers or programmers, to write store software or system admins to maintain a store based on a pre-built script.

Most of these types of stores have administration features you can access through your web browser, and you don't usually need any special knowledge to maintain your store look or update your online catalogs.

The drawback to this approach is a lack of flexibility. In many cases, pre-built stores provide limited customization options, require use of a specific payment processor and so on. However, if you are on a limited budget, have a small assortment of merchandise that does not have to be updated constantly, this can be an affordable way to put your business into its own virtual storefront.

If you are web designer, chances are you include forums on at least some of the sites you manage. Compared to some web designers, I am relatively new to the business. I created my first forum with MSN groups in 2002 then, six months later, I made the move over to EZBoard. Sure, it did not have all the bells and whistles of vBulletin and other corporate developed boards, but it did the trick for me. That is, until EZBoard was hacked and my livelihood nearly disappeared in moments some two years later!

3. Highly modifiable. Open Source extensibility is evident with the incorporation of PHP, HTML, CSS, and MySQL into the forum.

For the novice, PHPBB2 does take some getting used to especially since you are responsible for installing, maintaining, backing up, upgrading, and modifying your own forum. As with any software it is vulnerable to outside attacks, so take care to make sure you regularly back up your forums and familiarize yourself with the security procedures.

PHP can be very useful in your webiste design, I use PHP for my
websites difficult functions such as forums, blogs, chat, user forms,
and shopping cart interface. But did you know you can use simple PHP
for your website navigation systems?

The use of PHP for your websites header, left side navigation, and
bottom of page information can be a great asset. Now I know what you
are thinking, PHP can be complicated and intimidating to many of you,
but first let me explain.

Using simple PHP include commands is a method any webmaster at any
expertise level from novice to expert can implement with ease.

Most find editing PHP a frightening endeavor, but never fear, I will show you how.

A lot of us still use tables when designing our web pages instead of
CCS, below is a veiw of the basic setup I will be discussing in this
article:

main content of each page will be shown in PHP and this is what this

more, your visitors don’t need any special plug-ins for the code to
run, as it will be displayed just like your HTML coding.As PHP is a
server-side scripting language, although your visitors will not need to
install any new software, PHP must be set up on your server.

Following is a very simple script that will test your server to ensure
PHP is installed. It is a standard PHP function called phpinfo, which
instructs the browser to print out information in regard to the set up
of your server.

To use the script, simply copy the following three lines of code and paste them into a plain text editor, such as Note Pad.

Save the file as phpinfo.php and upload it to your server where you store your HTML files.

To run the script, simply point your browser to the script address. It should look something like this:

Steps to generate PHP navigation on your website.

First of all you need to enable create a php file with html includes
using the php include function. This is easily done by adding one line
to your .htaccess file for your apache driven site and have php parsed
in html files. To do this logon to your websites FTP account, go into
the .htdocs file, find the .htaccess file, edit it to add this one line
of code to the file:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .html

With that, you can have php blocks parsed in your html files so long as you put the php code in php tags. Example below:

We will get into how to use the above command a little later in this article .

Now on to the steps:

Step 1.

Build the the following pages in your favorite HTML editor:

A. header.html

B. left.html

C. bottom.html

D. right.html (optional)

referencing them as the above for this article. Once you have these
pages built to your liking, we now start implementing with PHP. First
build a new Index.html page, you can name it TEST or something until
you get it the way you want it. Set it up with tables to look like the
page below:

Step 2. Now here is the trick, rename each HTML page you just built,
“header.html, left.html, bottom.html, and right.html (optional)” to the
.php file extension. You can do this by opening each .html file in a
text file editor such as Notepad and save as .php to the same directory
as the .html files on your server. You will now have a copy of each
file in HTML and PHP format.

Step 3. We are now ready to use the new PHP files, in each table around
your main content we will insert the <---
?phpinclude("somefile.php");? ---> Command functions.

Step 4. Open your new index page in your favorite browser and you will
now see all the HTML pages you built come together as one page by using

save it as .php again. Now your PHP file is updated to match your
edited HTML file.

In conclusion:

Now when ever you update your website header and navigation pages the
results will be reflected on every page on your website that you have
setup in this fashion. And as a added bonus all the information and
links included in your navigation PHP can be seen and indexed by all
the search engine robots for higher rankings.

Note that both Google's service and PEAR::SOAP
are technically still in beta, so you might encounter the odd bug from
time to time. There are other SOAP client libraries available,
including the PHP5 SOAP extension and NuSOAP, and while implementation
details are different the basic theory is the same as presented here.

Setting up the PEAR SOAP module

Before we can start using SOAP, we had better make sure both PEAR
itself and the SOAP module are available. The PEAR package manager is
installed by default with PHP 4.3.0 and later, but if you are using an
earlier version or it is missing on your system check out the PEAR
manual for instructions.

Once you have the package manager installed, you will need to download
the SOAP package. On most systems, you can just enter pear install SOAP
into a console window. At least, that's the theory. Unless there is a
stable release of SOAP available, you will get the message No release
with state equal to: 'stable' found for 'SOAP'. Try pear install
SOAP-beta to get the most current version of the package at the time of
writing, even though it is in beta, or tell PEAR to accept beta
versions without complaint by typing pear config-set preferred_state
beta.

You may also get one or more messages starting with requires package,
followed by Dependencies failed. In this case, try the pear install
command again but add the dependencies on the command line. For
example, if PEAR complained that the Net_DIME package is missing, try
using pear install Net_DIME SOAP instead.

Getting a license key

Once you have installed the SOAP module, the next step is to download
the Google Web APIs developers' kit and register to get a license key.
This key allows you to make up to 1000 SOAP queries a day free of
charge. Visit Google Web APIs (http://www.google.co.uk/apis/) and
follow the instructions on the site.

Unzip the developers' kit and put it in a convenient place. It only
contains samples for accessing the service with .NET and Java, but most
of the documentation applies equally to calling Google from PHP.

Decoding the WSDL file

In the developer's kit main directory you will find a WSDL file called
GoogleSearch.wsdl, which you can open in a text editor or XML browser.
This file defines exactly what services we can call using SOAP, though
the Google documentation is probably easier to read!

However, we can also see what the SOAP module makes of this file. Create a new PHP page and enter the following.

Place it somewhere on your server along with GoogleSearch.wsdl and
access it through your web browser. Assuming everything is working
right, you should get a lot of PHP code output. This code is the result
of the SOAP_WSDL client class parsing the WSDL file and converting it
into PHP functions. This tells us what functions we can call in a
rather more readable form than the WSDL document, and is handy
particularly if you are using a poorly documented WSDL service.

So how does the code work? Let's go through it step by step:

1. First, we load the SOAP client file. If this gives an error, it
probably means SOAP isn't installed properly and you should read the
instructions above or the PEAR manual.

2. We then create an instance of the SOAP_WSDL class, based on the
GoogleSearch.wsdl file. This is one of the main classes we are going to
use throughout this tutorial: it parses the WSDL file and represents it
as PHP.

3. Finally, we output the proxy code as plain text. (As you can see
from the output, in SOAP the proxy is a class that represents the WSDL
calls available as PHP functions.)

Spell-checking with Google

If you've been using Google for a while (and type as erratically as
me), you have probably noticed the "Did you mean..." line that appears
if you misspell a word in a search. Thanks to the Google web service,
we can add this spelling checker to our PHP applications (though to be
honest, it would probably be better to use pspell in an actual
application). Enter the following code, with your own license key as
the first string.

Simple, isn't it? The first line is trivial and the next two are the
same as the previous example. The fourth line creates the proxy object
based on the code we looked at earlier, so we can make SOAP requests by
calling its methods. Finally, we call doSpellingSuggestion and output
the result. Access this page in your web browser, and you should see
the word 'dictionary' on its own.

You might see 'Object' instead, in which case SOAP has encountered a
problem and returned a SOAP_Fault object. We will look into dealing
with these faults sometime in the future, but for now check if you have
entered your license key correctly and not managed to exhaust your 1000
query per day limit (!).
